I, descending from my place on high, whose shoes the sinner is unworthy to untie— into the lowly sinner’s shoes I stepped, and wept the tears of shame the sinner too has wept. Into the shoes of murderers and thieves, of usurers, usurpers, and abusers— the sins of him who laughs and him who grieves, the pride of winners and the shame of losers— whatever guilt was ever felt by bless’d or damned, by rich or poor, by those to whom scarce grace was dealt— whatever guilt, I felt it more.
